Roundtable Staff Objectives

Roundtables are a form of commissioner service and supplemental training for volunteers at all levels. The objective of roundtables is to give leaders program ideas; information on policy, events, and training opportunities; and an opportunity to share experiences and enjoy fun and fellowship with other Scouting leaders. The roundtable commissioner and staff demonstrate elements of a model meeting that leaders may use as a pattern for their own meetings. The roundtable experience will inspire, motivate, and enable unit leaders to provide a stronger program for their Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts, Webelos and Boy Scouts.

Master of Commissioner Science

Today I went to Winston-Salem to further my Scout training by attending the College of Commissioner Science.  I sat through 5 hours of classes and learned quite a bit and will share some of that knowledge with you and then I can go back and read again when I forget.
  • As Commissioners we are to learn the signs of an ailing unit and be ready to offer suggestions and help when it is needed or asked for.
  • We also got some tips on counseling other Scout leaders so that the units will get the most from us.
  • We also learned that to have a good relationship with our professionals the main thing to know is their responsibilities and not expect them to go beyond them.
  • We should also know our responsibilities and make sure we are taking care of them.
I also picked up some interesting quotes from other leaders that I would like to pass on.
  1. Find the right person to deliver the right message to another person you can't reach.
  2. We are no longer a melting pot of people, but a tossed salad. All different with different taste, but when mixed together we look and taste good.
  3. Self assured leaders are not threatened by new ideas or diversity.
I look forward to serving my district as Boy Scout Roundtable Commissioner and I hope I can do the job justice.

Scout On,

David Hyler
Dan River District Boy Scout Roundtable Commissioner
