Roundtable Staff Objectives

Roundtables are a form of commissioner service and supplemental training for volunteers at all levels. The objective of roundtables is to give leaders program ideas; information on policy, events, and training opportunities; and an opportunity to share experiences and enjoy fun and fellowship with other Scouting leaders. The roundtable commissioner and staff demonstrate elements of a model meeting that leaders may use as a pattern for their own meetings. The roundtable experience will inspire, motivate, and enable unit leaders to provide a stronger program for their Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts, Webelos and Boy Scouts.

March Roundtable

Commissioners Story or Activity

Name of Story or Activity

  • Stranded activity from the Troop Planning Guides, Vol II on Leadership.
  • After the activity is over discuss the following.
    • Were group answers better than individual answers? Why?
    • Were there any disagreements? How did you resolve them?
    • Did anyone change their mind to simply agree and keep harmony or were you convinced the group was correct?
    • Did you listen to the other suggestions or did you convince yourself that yours was the only answer?
  • This is to show your scouts how that working together to make decisions is a good thing. It promotes teamwork and cooperation.

Commissioners Guest

  • No special guest. I am still looking for a Troop who would be willing to share some of their ceremonies with the group. Court of Honor, Eagle, etc. If we have a volunteer troop, get me some contact information.

Commissioners Minute

  • We can teach principles of leadership, but we don't learn leadership unless we live it. Leadership is more effectively taught with a hands-on application. It cannot come out of a book, but must be drawn like steel, slowly and repetitively; working out the errors through actual experiences; tempering them wiht the fire of adversity through the lemeents of nature, given responsibility, and with personal conflict and resolution; and finally, polished through sacrifice, service, and compassion. Only then do the simple experiences of the outdoors become the proving grounds that these young men need to prepare them for the greater experiences that will one day some thier way. That is what the Scouting program is all about. But it all starts with the Scout Oath
